  • Question I understand that the following conversion has to be made when soil element simulation is done by FLIPSIM on the triaxial undrained cyclic test: ystrain amplitude: double amplitude axial strain a=(v-h)~0.5~1.5, for example a=T5^2~1.5=3.75%isingle amplitudejz@yshear stress ratio: с^m=1.5~dl^Qc@dl: axial stress difference dl(=Ђ-h),@Ђ: confining stress z. Is my understanding correct?

Answer In triaxial undrained cyclic test, double amplitude of strain is defined in terms of axial strain, not axial strain difference. Because it is undrained condition, volumetric strain is unchanged and v+h+h=0 holds.

Consequently, shear strain in triaxial undrained cyclic test becomes v-h=v+v/2=1.5vidouble amplitude shear strainj. Single amplitude shear strain is =0.75v. For v=5%, =3.75% holds.

Shear stress ratio is dl/(2c')=(dl/2)/c'=/c'i is shear stress at a plane with 45 inclinationj. Consequently no conversion is required.
